Chapter Eleven
Third Time’s the Charm
Trump had never given the impression that he was in a hurry to get married and, following his divorce from Marla, seemed quite content. But, in his private moments, he would often play up the importance of family and, as he aged, insisted that even with four children, there was still a desire to enlarge his brood. Trump would often insist that a future wife at this point would have to have her own mind and her own drive, ambitions and attitudes, perhaps with an unintentional aside to first wife Ivana. Many cynics rolled their eyes at those pronouncements, because the reality, truth be known, was that Trump had always gravitated toward a nice, somewhat submissive woman who deferred to him in all instances. Trump, as many would acknowledge, was always enamored of the concept of ‘the trophy wife.’
And in Melania Knauss, Trump seemed to have found his latest dream woman.
Melania (born April 26, 1970 in Slovenia) was, from the beginning, far from the traditional European stereotype. She was inquisitive, always striving to learn and, in her own way, a driven go-getter, much in the way of Trump. Design and architecture were her courses of choice at university. After graduation she gravitated toward the high glitz of modeling where her soft but striking good looks made her a regular on the fashion runways of Milan and Paris. By 1996, Melania was seeking new experiences in the United States, where she mixed with fashion photographers and made her way to the cover of several high-end magazines.
She mingled with all the right people at all the right parties where she was, by media observers, a star on the rise. It was at one such party in 1998 that Melania met Trump. In a description in a New York Times piece that also appeared in New Straits Times.com, their initial meeting was described in breathless, tabloid terms.
Trump would relive those moments when he first set eyes on Melania in a 2005 CNN interview with talk show host Larry King. “I went crazy [when I saw her],” he recalled. “I was actually supposed to be meeting somebody else. There was this great supermodel that I was supposed to be meeting and she was sitting right next to Melania. The person that was sort of setting the meeting up said, ‘Look! There’s so and so!’ I said ‘forget about her. Who is the one on the left?’”
Their attraction was immediate and mutual. They talked easily throughout the evening. The fact that Melania was more than 20 years Trump’s junior did not seem to enter into the equation. “It was great chemistry and energy. We started to talk. We had a great time. Something was ‘there’ right away.”
By the end of the evening, there were sparks. Not surprisingly, Trump made the first move and asked for her telephone number. But Melania was playing hard to get. “I am not a girl who will just give away a number to anybody,” she told The New York Times.
